This week’s spiritual discipline is forgiveness. This blog is from the book a slow and sudden God: 40 years of wonder.

forgive us our trespasses,

we pray.

as we forgive those who have

trespassed against us,

we say.

a decision we make,

is forgiveness.

not waiting until a payment is made,

an apology requested,

a confession voiced,

an awareness of wrong.

not waiting at all

but choosing to forgive.

no longer holding an action

against another.

maybe the person

needing to be forgiven

has no knowledge of their need.

maybe they know

but don’t care.

maybe they continue

to believe they’re right.

forgive anyway.

that’s the way toward healing.
